EPIDURAL ABSCESS – Diagnosis and Management
نویسنده
چکیده
Spinal epidural abscess (SEA) was first described in the medical literature in 1761 and represents a severe infection of the epidural space requiring emergent neurosurgical intervention to avoid permanent neurologic deficits [1]. Epidural abscess is a rare condition, with a reported incidence of 1 ± 2 / 10.000 of all patients admitted to hospital [2]. It is generally thought to be a "very rare, severe complication" of central nerve blocks.

Upper Cervical Epidural Abscess in Clinical Practice: Diagnosis and Management
Study Design Narrative review. Objective Upper cervical epidural abscess (UCEA) is a rare surgical emergency. Despite increasing incidence, uncertainty remains as to how it should initially be managed. Risk factors for UCEA include immunocompromised hosts, diabetes mellitus, and intravenous drug use. Our objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature including the history, c...

Background & Importance: Infections of the craniocervical junction are rare. Case Presentation: We present a case of infection by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mitis that was not previously reported. Conclusion: Neurosurgeons must suspect for diagnosis and initiate broad antimicrobial therapy, including active agents against gram-negative and then...

We present three cases of epidural abscess, all in patients in whom an epidural catheter had been inserted for postoperative pain management. In all three cases the infecting organism was Staphylococcus aureus and two patients had diabetes. The diagnosis was made within 3 days of epidural catheter removal in two cases, but in one the abscess did not present until after the patient had been disc...

BACKGROUND Spinal epidural abscess is an uncommon disease with a relatively high rate of associated morbidity and mortality. The most important determinant of outcome is early diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment. OBJECTIVES We aim to highlight the clinical manifestations, describe the early diagnostic evaluation, and outline the treatment principles for spinal epidural abscess i...

Despite advances in neuroimaging and neurosurgical treatment modalities, spinal epidural abscess remains a challenging problem. Early diagnosis is often difficult and treatment is always delayed. Spinal epidural abscess usually develops in patients with predisposing factors such as IV drug abuse, senillity, diabetes mellitus, spinal attempts, alcoholism, immunosuppression, liver diseases and ca...
